The versatility of piezoelectric sensors in measurement techniques and their performance in applications has given rise to an increased interest in their use for structural and manufacturing component monitoring. They enable wireless and sensor network solutions to be developed in order to directly integrate the sensors into machines, fixtures and tools. Piezoelectric sensors increasingly compete with strain-gauges due to their wide operational temperature range, load and strain sensing accuracy, low power consumption and low cost. This research sets out the use of piezoelectric sensors for real-time monitoring of mechanical strength in metallic structures in the ongoing operational control of machinery components. The behaviour of aluminium and steel structures under flexural strength was studied using piezoelectric sensors. Variations in structural behaviour and geometry were measured, and the load and μstrains during operational conditions were quantified in the time domain at a specific frequency. The lead zirconium titanate (PZT) sensors were able to distinguish between material types and thicknesses. Moreover, this work covers frequency selection and optimisation from 20 Hz to 300 kHz. Significant differences in terms of optimal operating frequencies and sensitivity were found in both structures. The influence of the PZT voltage applied was assessed to reduce power consumption without signal loss, and calibration to μstrains and loads was performed. This research was funded by Basque Government, grant number KK-2019/00051-SMARTRESNAK and by the European Commission, grant number 869884- RECLAIM

Q4Q1Pacientes con Infección complicada del tracto urinarioIntroduction and hypothesis: Complicated urinary tract infection (cUTI) is highly prevalent and costly for health systems. The impact of the indwelling urinary catheter on etiologic agents and clinical outcomes has been poorly studied in Latin America. Methods: Cross-sectional study including patients with cUTI, with positive urine culture, treated at Hospital Universitario San Ignacio, Bogotá (Colombia) between 2017 and 2020. Clinical and microbiologic characteristics, treatments and outcomes are explored, comparing those with and without indwelling urinary catheter. Results: Seven hundred thirty-five patients with non-catheter-associated cUTI (NC-cUTI) and 165 with catheter-associated cUTI (CAUTI) were included. CAUTI group had a higher proportion of recurrent UTI (18% vs 33.3%, p 30 days unplanned readmission rate (5.8% vs 10.3%, p < 0.001). In the same group, we found a higher frequency of Pseudomonas spp (2.6% vs 9.4%, p < 0.001), Enterococcus spp. (2.4% vs 3.3%, p = 0.016), Serratia marcescens (0.6% vs 3.3%, p < 0.001) and Citrobacter freundii (0.5% vs 5.7%, p < 0.001). It implied a higher number of patients treated with fourth-generation cephalosporins (1.4% vs 4.8%, p = 0.004), ertapenem (32.9% vs 41.8%, p = 0.027) and carbapenems associated with a second antibiotic (1.9% vs 8.5%, p < 0.001). Conclusions: Patients with CAUTI have a higher frequency of resistant germs, require greater use of resources and have worse clinical outcomes than patients who do not require such devices. Measures should be strengthened to minimize its use, in both the hospital and outpatient setting.https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6392-7554https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5401-0018https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8658-6513https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6396-3267Revista Internacional - IndexadaA1N

New Image Recognition Technique for Intuitive Understanding in Class of the Dynamic Response of High-Rise Buildings.

In the last years, more and more studies have highlighted the advantages of complementing traditional master classes with additional activities that improve students’ learning experience. This combination of teaching techniques is specially advised in the field of structural engineering, where intuition of the structural response it is of vital importance to understand the studied concepts. This paper deals with the introduction of a new (and more encouraging) educational tool to introduce students intuitively to the dynamic response of structures excited with an educational shaking table. Most of the educational structural health monitoring systems use sensors to determine the dynamic response of the structure. The proposed tool is based on a radically different approach, as it is based on low-cost image-recognition techniques. In fact, it only requires the use of an amateur camera, a black background, and a computer. In this study, the effects of both the camera location and the image quality are also evaluated. Finally, to validate the applicability of the proposed methodology, the dynamic response of small-scale buildings with different typologies is analyzed. In addition, a series of surveys were conducted in order to evaluate the activity based on student´s satisfaction and the actual acquisition and strengthening of knowledgepost-print8992 K

CD13 as a new tumor target for antibody-drug conjugates: validation with the conjugate MI130110

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: In the search for novel antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) with therapeutic potential, it is imperative to identify novel targets to direct the antibody moiety. CD13 seems an attractive ADC target as it shows a differential pattern of expression in a variety of tumors and cell lines and it is internalized upon engagement with a suitable monoclonal antibody. PM050489 is a marine cytotoxic compound tightly binding tubulin and impairing microtubule dynamics which is currently undergoing clinical trials for solid tumors. METHODS: Anti-CD13 monoclonal antibody (mAb) TEA1/8 has been used to prepare a novel ADC, MI130110, by conjugation to the marine compound PM050489. In vitro and in vivo experiments have been carried out to demonstrate the activity and specificity of MI130110. RESULTS: CD13 is readily internalized upon TEA1/8 mAb binding, and the conjugation with PM050489 did not have any effect on the binding or the internalization of the antibody. MI130110 showed remarkable activity and selectivity in vitro on CD13-expressing tumor cells causing the same effects than those described for PM050489, including cell cycle arrest at G2, mitosis with disarrayed and often multipolar spindles consistent with an arrest at metaphase, and induction of cell death. In contrast, none of these toxic effects were observed in CD13-null cell lines incubated with MI130110. Furthermore, in vivo studies showed that MI130110 exhibited excellent antitumor activity in a CD13-positive fibrosarcoma xenograft murine model, with total remissions in a significant number of the treated animals. Mitotic catastrophes, typical of the payload mechanism of action, were also observed in the tumor cells isolated from mice treated with MI130110. In contrast, MI130110 failed to show any activity in a xenograft mouse model of myeloma cells not expressing CD13, thereby corroborating the selectivity of the ADC to its target and its stability in circulation. CONCLUSION: Our results show that MI130110 ADC combines the antitumor potential of the PM050489 payload with the selectivity of the TEA1/8 monoclonal anti-CD13 antibody and confirm the correct intracellular processing of the ADC. These results demonstrate the suitability of CD13 as a novel ADC target and the effectiveness of MI130110 as a promising antitumor therapeutic agent. This work was partially supported by grant IPT-2012-0198-090000 (“MARINMAB” project) from Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (MINECO) and European Regional Development’s funds (ERDF) and by CSIC grant 2019AEP146.S

Constructing virtual 5-dimensional tori out of lower-dimensional network cards

[EN] In the Top500 and Graph500 lists of the last years, some of the most powerful systems implement a torus topology to interconnect themillions of computing nodes they include. Some of these torus networks are of five or six dimensions, which implies an additional difficulty as the node degree increases. In previous works, we proposed and evaluated the nD Twin (nDT) torus topology to virtually increase the dimensions a torus is able to implement. We showed that this new topology reduces the distances between nodes, increasing, therefore, global network performance. In this work, we present how to build a 5DT torus network using a specific commercial 6-port network card (EXTOLL card) to interconnect those nodes. We show, using the same number of cards, that the performance of the 5DT torus network we are able to implement using our proposal is higher than the performance of the 3D torus network for the same number of compute nodes.Spanish MINECO; European Commission, Grant/Award Number: TIN2015-66972-C5-1-R and TIN2015-66972-C5-2-R; JCCM, Grant/Award Number: PEII-2014-028-P; Spanish MICINN, Grant/Award Number: FJCI-2015-26080Andújar-Muñoz, FJ.; Villar, JA.; Sanchez Garcia, JL.; Alfaro Cortes, FJ.; Duato Marín, JF.; Fröning, H. Objective: to determine the anthropometric profile, the physical condition and the behavior of biomarkers associated with physical load in ranked soccer referees from Quindío’s region. Methodology: there was participation of 14 referees (9 assistants and 5 main referees); whose body composition was estimated through the 4-component model, in addition to health indices as physical condition variables which were evaluated: flexibility, strength, speed and resistance; this last variable was measured through the intermittent level 1 YOYO test, where maximum heart rate and the recovery associated with it were measured, the subjective perceived exertion (RPE), mass and urine specific gravity (USG) to determine the state of hydration in the test. Results: Among the main results, it was found that, with respect to the health marker groups, the referees were in the ranges considered normal, in the characterization of the physical condition, no statistical significance was found between (assistant referees and main referees). Regarding the behavior of physical load markers, it was observed that the maximum heart rate was 188 and 181 bpm on average for main and assistant referees, respectively, without statistical significance. The recovery after the stimulus occurred in a decreasing way and in each of the shots showed statistical significance with respect to the previous one. The RPE was classified as a very heavy effort. Finally, regarding the state of hydration, it was shown that, although the mass, pre and post, presented a statistically significant difference, the same did not occur with respect to USG. Conclusion: although the main referees presented better physical condition results than the assistant referees, these differences were not statistically significant. Regarding physical load biomarkers, they behaved similarly in both groups.

A DNA Microarray-Based Assay to Detect Dual Infection with Two Dengue Virus Serotypes

    Get PDF
Here; we have described and tested a microarray based-method for the screening of dengue virus (DENV) serotypes. This DNA microarray assay is specific and sensitive and can detect dual infections with two dengue virus serotypes and single-serotype infections. Other methodologies may underestimate samples containing more than one serotype. This technology can be used to discriminate between the four DENV serotypes. Single-stranded DNA targets were covalently attached to glass slides and hybridised with specific labelled probes. DENV isolates and dengue samples were used to evaluate microarray performance. Our results demonstrate that the probes hybridized specifically to DENV serotypes; with no detection of unspecific signals. This finding provides evidence that specific probes can effectively identify single and double infections in DENV samples
